Chiastolite is a variation of the mineral andalusite. It's predominantly associated with distinctive cross-shaped design features made of graphite. The presence of the cross contributed to this mineral being used as a gemstone.

 

History

 

Chiastolite jewelry was found throughout Europe during the 16th century, as a talisman or souvenir that returning pilgrims brought home from pilgrimages to Spain. In older books of geology, chiastolite is referred to by the name of lapis crucifer, meaning cross stone, .
